The State Council on Cancer Control was authorized by the Governor in June 1991 and restructured in November 1997 (Executive Order 01.01.1991.22; Executive Order 01.01.1997.07). The Council works with the Governor to develop State policy and programs to reduce the incidence of cancer in Maryland. Access to testing, screening, and treatment, and programs for public education, prevention, and treatment of cancer are recommended by the Council. The Council also evaluates programs and promotes public-private partnerships to lower the incidence of cancer.
In addition, goals and priorities of the Cancer Surveillance System are set by the Council. The System collects data on incidence, diagnostic stage, mortality, and risk factors for cancer. Through the Maryland Cancer Registry Advisory Committee, the System also uses the Maryland Cancer Registry as a tool to plan, evaluate, and target cancer control programs.
