Maryland's population was 4,780,753 in 1990, according to the federal census conducted every 10 years by the U.S. Census Bureau. The Bureau's State Population Estimates Program estimates the 1999 population at 5,171,634. Maryland ranks 19th in population and 6th in population density among states (including the District of Columbia) with 529.08 persons per square land mile as computed for 1998.

From 1990 to 1999, Maryland population grew 8.2%. It rose .8% in 1999. Howard County led all other counties from 1998 to 1999 with a 3.4% increase in population.

Annually, the Division of Health Statistics of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene publishes Maryland Vital Statistics. The Department of Planning has information on population as well.
